On 4/21/2021 BBC News reported that a University of Oxford study has indicated a malaria vaccine showing 77% efficacy in a small trial involving 450 children in Burkina Faso (a country in West Africa). The vaccine has also proved to be safe. A larger vaccine trial involving 5,000 children across 4 African countries is now being started. This is the first vaccine to meet the World Health Organization (WHO) target of at least 75% efficacy. We have been praying for this type of breakthrough in the prevention of malaria, and thank God for this encouraging news. Here is a link to the BBC News report:
Unlike many other diseases that are awaiting a cure, malaria was eliminated in the U.S. in the 1950’s. However, in sub-Saharan Africa, malaria continues to kill a child every 2 minutes.
But, there is hope!
Imagine No Malaria is an effort of The United Methodist Church to eliminate malaria deaths in Africa, delivering resources that empower the people of Africa to beat a disease that kills a child every two minutes. We are improving prevention methods and education about the disease, establishing community-based malaria control programs, and revitalizing hospitals and clinics throughout the continent. There are literally hundreds of churches, schools, hospitals, and clinics operated by The United Methodist Church in Africa. Imagine No Malaria makes sure these facilities have the diagnostic tests and treatments needed to save lives.
The Good News: Malaria is 100% preventable. The bite of malaria doesn’t have to kill. You can support our efforts to stop it!
